  • Who should enrol?

    This course is tailored for ophthalmology registrars affiliated with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology (RANZCO) or an equivalent body, as well as registered ophthalmologists seeking to refine their skills in glaucoma care. This interactive course consists of 6 lectures and 3 tutorials, including engaging discussions and clinical case reviews led by glaucoma sub-specialists. Participants will not only gain theoretical knowledge but also practical insights that can be immediately applied in clinical settings. The course structure encourages collaboration and interaction through an online discussion forum, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of lecture topics and share insights with peers and tutors.

     Accreditation Status

    The course is currently in the process of obtaining 14 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accreditation from RANZCO, further validating its quality and relevance in the field.

    Learning Outcomes

    • Distinguish between glaucoma and other optic neuropathies to enhance diagnostic accuracy
    • Determine when and how to effectively investigate chronic optic neuropathies
    • Confidently establish treatment paths for early-stage glaucoma, ensuring timely intervention
    • Optimise the use of selective laser trabeculoplasty to improve patient outcomes
    • Understand the various types of perimetry and their applicability in clinical practice
    • Assess scenarios where shared glaucoma care may be appropriate, promoting collaborative patient management
    • Evaluate angle closure risks and discuss evidence-based treatment options
    • Refine selection criteria for trabecular-based minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
    • Optimise surgical techniques for trabecular-based MIGS
    • Identify and manage complications related to glaucoma drainage surgery, including bleb management

    Lecture Topics

      1. Overview of Glaucoma: types of glaucoma, risk factors and epidemiology

       

      2. Differential Diagnosis: distinguishing glaucoma from other optic neuropathies

       

      3. Diagnostic Techniques: visual field testing and perimetry, optical coherence and tomography (OCT), tonometry and intraocular pressure measurement

       

      4. Investigative Procedures: when and how to investigate chronic optic neuropathies

       

      5. Management Strategies: treatment options for early glaucoma, pharmacological management, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) techniques 

       

      6. Surgical Interventions: trabecular-based minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), indications for surgical intervention in angle closure

       

      7. Angle Closure Glaucoma: assessing angle closure risk, treatment evidence and protocols

       

      8. Bleb management: identifying blebs from different glaucoma drainage surgeries, management and when to seek help

       

      9. Shared Care Models: when and how to implement shared glaucoma care

       

      10. Ethical and Professional Considerations: best practices in clinical ethics and professionalism

       

    Course delivery method

    6 pre-recorded lectures, released weekly, accessible online.
    Online "live" tutorials with presentation and discussion of cases by course participants. These live Zoom tutorials will be held every Tuesday evening: 22nd September, 6th October and 20th October. Please note these dates may change.
    Q&A via online discussion boards.

    Additional Information

    There are two requirements for successful completion of the course:
    1. Participation in 4 out of the 6 weekly discussion boards. This can range from asking a question about that week's lecture topic to sharing some insights with other participants or discussing a paper you read on the topic.
    2. Presentation of a case relevant to the course topic at one of the live tutorials.
