Modules

The course comprises of four modules:

  1. DNA and Genes: Explore the structure and functions of DNA, the central dogma of molecular biology, and the genetic code.
  2. Chromosomes: Learn about chromosome structure, abnormalities, and investigative techniques.
  3. Genetic Inheritance: Understand Mendelian patterns, pedigrees, and non-Mendelian inheritance.
  4. Genomics and Precision Medicine: Discover the role of genomic sequencing in modern healthcare, principles of genomic testing, outcomes, and the impact of precision medicine on health.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe the structure, functions and chemical components of DNA and RNA, and their impact on disease.
  • Explain the structure of chromosomes, their inheritance, and impact of chromosomal abnormalities on health.
  • Interpret genetic Mendelian inheritance patterns, pedigrees, and their genetic counselling implications.
  • Evaluate recent advances in genomics and precision medicine, and their impact on healthcare.
