Adult Restorative Short Course for Oral Health Therapy
This course is for oral health therapists to expand their current scope of practice within their current registration division to include restorative treatment planning and procedures for adult patients.
Advanced Training for Oral Health Therapists
This course offers the Oral Health Therapist (OHT) or dual trained dental hygienist/dental therapist the opportunity to broaden their professional skill set to include restorative treatment planning and procedures for adult patients. The course has been revised to meet the needs of the working clinician and consists of online Zoom lectures, online Zoom case study discussions and 3 days of simulated clinical practice with the supervision of registered dentists or oral health therapists with Adult Scope.
The course will provide participants education and clinical skill development relevant to the provision of restorative treatment for adult patients, taking into consideration their periodontal status. Additionally, the course will include advanced didactic content such as cone-beam imaging, the role of medicines in managing oral health, an update in restorative dentistry, and adult restorative treatment planning.

Learning outcomes
- Explain the clinical significance of normal and anatomical variation for radiographic imaging techniques, trauma, temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain, local anaesthesia and obstructive sleep apnoea
- Apply knowledge and skills in bioscience to deliver safe and person-centred care, including comprehensive clinical information gathering and interpretation, treatment planning, application of local anaesthetics, confident management of medicine in managing oral health, and rational prescribing Dental Schedule medicines
- Describe the foundational concepts in materials science
- Develop and demonstrate adult-restorative treatment planning skills through participating and learning in case-based tutorials
- Perform quality assessment in radiographic imaging and describe film faults in conventional and panoramic imaging
- Demonstrate disciplinary knowledge in tooth conservation and technical skills in cavity design and restorations using direct restorative materials
- Describe nonoperative and operative approaches in adult restorative treatment of dental pathology
- Describe and apply the basics involved in conducting a dental clinical examination and documenting this (including odontogram) following required procedures and protocols
- Describe the types of removable, fixed dental prostheses and materials used to construct them
- Discuss the impact of dental prostheses on oral health and the role of oral health therapist in the maintenance of oral health in patients with dental prostheses
- Explain drug and alcohol use disorders and outline the patterns of use, treatment and adverse reactions
- Discuss overdose and withdrawal management and implications of drug use and addition on dental treatment
- Discuss the nature and mechanisms of obstructive sleep apnoea, its relation to oral and dental diseases and the role of oral health therapist
Course delivery method
This course will be delivered predominantly online. It will consist of a series of videos, Zoom lectures and Zoom Workshops.
A schedule of the Zoom lectures will be provided closer to the start date.
The final section of the course will be a 3-day workshop of simulated practice.
Course pre-requisites
- Proof of current AHPRA registration as either an oral health therapist or dual trained dental hygienist/dental therapist
- Proof of graduation with either an undergraduate degree in oral health therapy or dental hygiene and dental therapy
- Certificate of professional indemnity insurance
- Minimum of 3 years practical dental experience as an OHT or dual qualified dental therapist/dental hygienist
- Statutory Declaration of affirming currency of practice
Please note – we can only accept candidates who have no restrictions on clinical practice.
The simulation component of this course is a mandatory requirement to obtain a certificate of completion for this course.

Time: 8.30am - 5.00pm
Location: Sydney Bligh St Sim Clinic - TBC
Participants will have three days to practice their restorative skills and will be provided with instruments and a Columbia Typodont Model for use within the University of Sydney Simulation Clinic. Participants may be required to purchase more plastic teeth to practice from the vending machine, which is available at the simulation premises.
