Learning Outcomes

    At the end of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a minimum standard of technical skills required for surgical training assisted by expert faculty
  • Perform and assist with stimulated surgical procedures of skin incision, bowel and vascular anastomosis, and laparoscopic procedures
  • Discuss how to prepare for surgical training and gain skills in communication and career planning to undertake training effectively.

  • Instrument handling, knot tying 
  • Suturing and excision of skin lesions 
  • Laparoscopic surgery 
  • Bowel and vascular anastomosis

Communications Workshop (Day 2) 1 November 
Pam McLean Centre

Morning: Surgical Communications Skills with Dr Renee Lim 

  • How to deal with conflict and bullying
  • Breaking bad news

Afternoon: Surgical Discussions with Associate Professor Anthony Glover 

  • Definition of a Surgeon: What are the core competencies of a surgeon?
  • Case scenarios encountered during training: Facilitated through small group discussions
  • Career planning
  • Group discussion

Course Pre-requisites

Academic Background: Final year medical students, junior doctors, pre-specialty doctors, rural GPs.

This workshop has been taken from Master Surgery, subject SURG5031 Surgical Skills, which offers 30-40 enrolments each semester.  

Surgical training offers the opportunity to expand your skills; however, getting a head start on the basic skills and knowledge required for training can be difficult.  

The Surgical Skills workshop offers you the chance to get a head start on training with a 2-day workshop covering practical skills required as a surgical trainee to communication and training discussions.
