When skeletal remains are found in Australia, it is critical they are identified and managed in a timely and sensitive manner. Non-human bones must be distinguished from human bone and historic indigenous remains from recent forensic cases.

You will complete the course online and attend a 2-day practical workshop.

The online course will involve your attendance at a series of lectures and tutorials, which will be recorded and available for you to review after each session. There will be opportunities for self-testing such as bone identification and quizzes. The lectures will be delivered live through Zoom and will also be recorded. There will be small group problem solving based around a virtual ‘crime scene’ which will involve the management (recovery, recording and identification) of found skeletal remains.

Module Topics

  • Identification of human bones and teeth.
  • Identification of non-human bones and teeth.
  • Ancestry determination and time since death.
  • Sex, age and stature determination.
  • Taphonomy, pathology, management/legal issues.
  • Two-day Practical workshop in the Shellshear Museum, University of Sydney. Investigation of a variety of case studies

Learning Outcomes

  • Discriminate between human and non-human bones and teeth and communicate reasons.
  • Select the appropriate procedure to assess ancestry, sex, age and stature.
  • Discriminate between ante-mortem and peri-mortem trauma and taphonomic changes.
  • Sex, age and stature determination.
  • Appreciate the legal requirements associated with found remains and identify which body to refer them to.

Course delivery method

  • Week 1: Monday 29 April, 4.30pm – 5.30pm, welcome, meet and greet with Dr Denise Donlan (live) and 1 hour lecture (live).
  • Week 1 – Week 3: (30 April – 17th May) 5-hour prerecorded lectures for learner to watch + case study.
  • Week 3: Thursday 16th May, 4.30pm – 5.30pm: 1-hour live discussion of the case study.
  • Week 4 – Week 5: (20th – 29th May) 4 hours of prerecorded lecturers.
  • Week 5: Thursday 30th and Friday 31st May 2023. 2-day workshop at J.L. Shellshear Museum, 9.00am - 5.00pm
