To explore and understand the basic concepts of normal sleep, sleep disorders and their treatment.

Course Description

    This 6-week online course, covers all aspects of sleep medicine and technology. Starting with foundation knowledge about normal respiratory and sleep physiology, it will also cover all sleep disorders and their treatment, including practical application of sleep disorders assessment and treatment. You will be taught about current practice in sleep science, as well as introduced to new and exciting advances for the future.

  • Non-respiratory sleep disorders 

Learning outcomes

  • Gain an understanding of normal sleep in adults and paediatrics, normal sleep processes, and the role of sleep in overall health
  • Recognise and identify sleep disorders in adults and children, including sleep related breathing disorders, movement disorders, insomnia and disorders of excessive sleepiness, and the consequences thereof
  • Describe the role and limitations of various treatment modalities for obstructive sleep apnoea, including CPAP, oral appliance, and conservative treatments
  • Understand the relevant components of respiratory anatomy and physiology and how this applies to nocturnal hypoventilation and its treatment

Course delivery method

This six-week course includes online lectures, readings, and quizzes at a self-determined pace, with a time commitment of approximately 5-8 hours per week. Please refer to the below schedule of live Zoom sessions which will be available from 6.30pm – 7.30pm AEDT (subject to change). Zoom sessions will be recorded for later viewing.:

  • Mon 5 Feb – Live: Basics of Respiratory Physiology during wake and sleep - 6.30pm - 7.30pm
  • Wed 7 Feb - Week 2 Live Q&A panel session - 6.30pm - 7.30pm
  • Wed 14 Feb - Week 3 Central Sleep Apnoea; Dr Budhima Nanayakkara - 5.30pm - 6.30pm
  • Wed 14 Feb - Week 3 Live Q&A panel session - 6.30pm - 7.30pm
  • Wed 21 Feb - Week 4 Live Q&A panel session - 6.30pm - 7.30pm
  • Wed 28 Feb - Week 5 Live Q&A panel session - 6.30pm - 7.30pm
  • Wed 6 Mar - Week 6 Live Q&A panel session & close of course - 6.30pm-8.00pm

Course pre-requisites

This course is an intensive introduction to the field of sleep medicine. It is essential for all those new to the field and recommended for those who would like to refresh their knowledge base. It can be undertaken as a standalone course online or as an introduction to the masters' degree and diploma courses in sleep medicine offered through the University of Sydney.

There is an additional face-to-face course following the 6 weeks with limited places available.

Additional Course Information

  • Sleep Medicine - IP Communications, will be referenced frequently throughout the course as well as be a required reading resource. It is highly recommended that participants purchase this prior to commencing the course. It can be purchased as an ebook or hard copy from the following online stores, Booktopia or Amazon
  • The renowned, Professor Colin Sullivan, along with a team of 20 sleep professionals of varying backgrounds and specialised skills will present this course.
  • T• This course has previously been granted 32 Continuing Education Credits for those with the RPSGT qualification, by the Australian & New Zealand Sleep Science Association, and an application for these will be made in due course.
  • Around 20 highly experienced professionals will be providing lectures in their specialised field. These include, but are not limited to:
